About the Event

Help us take down our sukkah*, and take the first step in getting our fallow shmita** field ready for next year's farming! Then gather for soup and reflection on this past shmita** year both at the farm and in your life.

Schedule:

4:00-6:00pm Sukkah Take Down

6:00-7:00 pm Collective Farm Work

7:00-8:00pm Dinner and Shmita Year Reflection

Please come for whatever portion you are able to--all help is welcome. We are prioritizing dinner for people who are also volunteering, as well as community members for whom farm work is not feasible for their bodies.

Sukkah Take Down involves: holding lumber, standing on step ladders, using drills, working as a team to transport lumber to a barn for storage, keeping parts organized, removing walls and decorations and storing them in an organized fashion in boxes.

Collective Farm Work involves: moving a large tarp as a team from one section of field to another. We will see what the soil looks like after being under a tarp for almost a year and what will need to be done to get it ready for our grain planting event Sunday October 30th. We will then cover an adjacent section of the field to help the plant matter that grew this past year decompose into rich soil for spring planting.

Dinner will be a pot of GF vegan soup. The Yesod Farm crew will share what shmita looked and felt like on this land. We will then also provide prompts for reflection and sharing in small groups.

COVID: Please stay home if you are not feeling well or if you have been exposed to someone with symptoms or who has tested positive for COVID in the past 10 days. We ask that everyone brings their own mask and will also have surgical masks available. Everyone will be wearing a mask when working in close proximity to someone else, including the farm work portion. Dinner will be served by Yesod staff wearing masks. Individuals can choose how close/distanced they sit from others during dinner and discussion.

Accessibility:

4-7pm in the field: There are flat, unpaved, wide walkways in the field. There is some shade next to the area we are working in but we will be working in the direct sun. There will be many tripping hazards and tools out as we take down the sukkah, as well as noises from power tools. The area we are walking together in the field may be squishy depending on the weather. The tarp will likely be smelly, which will help everyone wear their masks! We will have some chairs, but if you have a chair that works best for you, you are invited to bring it. The available bathrooms are a few minutes walk uphill from the field.

7-8pm on the lawn: There is an uphill walk from the parking spot to the dinner venue, with closer parking available. We will be eating on a mowed lawn that is not perfectly flat. We will provide folding chairs for seating. If you have a chair that works better for you, you are welcome to bring it. There is no shade at the dinner venue but it should be dark. The dinner area will be illuminated with string lights. There is a composting toilet and handwashing station nearby. Food will be served by Yesod staff who will be masked. Dinner will be GF and vegan. Please reach out with any additional dietary restrictions.

Please email info@yesodfarm.org with accessibility requests and questions.

Address provided upon registration.

*Sukkah: A temporary structure built for the fall holiday festival of sukkot.

**Shmita: the agricultural and economic year of remission in ancestral Jewish wisdom. Themes of shmita are release, humility, communal systems of support where everyone eats, and letting the land rest from human intervention.
