Planting Garlic & Grain

Come to Yesod Farm+Kitchen on Sunday, October 30, 10-2pm, for a volunteer day as we plant garlic and wheat! These are 2 long-season crops that help us track the Jewish lunisolar calendar, and 2 important foods in Jewish cuisine and culture. 

Garlic: a beloved food, medicine, and source of protection.

Wheat: one of the sacred species, and the main ingredient in bread--the food that culturally defines a 'meal'

This event is outdoors and distanced, but please **bring a mask** in case there are times where we need to be in closer proximity.

All are welcome. This includes families, folks of diverse abilities, and any religious background. There will be tasks for all ages and abilities.

Schedule:

10-10:30am: Introductions and Garlic Learning! Get oriented to both Yesod Farm+Kitchen and each other. Learn about the Jewish relationship to garlic and how this magical plant grows.

10:30-12pm: Garlic Planting! We will be pulling existing plants out of beds, adding compost, planting garlic, and spreading straw mulch. 

12:15-12:30 Learning about wheat

12:30-12:45 Wheat planting! We will be broadcasting (scattering) wheat seed into the field

1-2pm: BYO Lunch! We’ll be eating together outside. A limited amount of food will be provided. Please RSVP if you want us to feed you. Please bring your own cup, plate, bowl, and utensils.

Please come for whatever amount of time works for you – any help is appreciated.

Accessibility: There are flat, unpaved, wide walkways in the field. We have some shade structures and chairs. The available bathrooms are a few minutes walk uphill from the field. Please email info@yesodfarm.org with accessibility requests and questions.
