About the Event
A mezuzah is a small piece of parchment inscribed with words of Torah. It is protected inside a case that is affixed to doorways of a Jewish home. People find the presence of mezuzot in their homes meaningful in various ways. They may feel protected by sacred space, affirmed in their Jewish identity, or reminded of their Jewish commitments and values.
In this event, you will make a  mezuzah and clay case that will belong to you. You will also learn to make kosher ink. You'll have a choice between writing the Deuteronomy verses that are traditionally used on mezuzot, or other words that speak to you.
The paper provided for the scroll is handmade by local artist Alyssa Sacora, a neighbor of Yesod who teaches her own art workshops at The Patchwork Underground. If you prefer instead to use klaf (holy parchment made from ethically-raised goats), please add it to your order for tickets. There is an additional cost of $15 which covers the cost of kosher klaf lovingly produced by rabbinical student Simcha Halpert-Hanson.
The mezuzah scroll itself won't be kosher because according to halacha (Jewish Law) it must on be written on parchment by a trained scribe. You can buy one online to put in your case, if you wish. The ritual objects we will make together are an adaptation of traditions.
Covid safety: This event is outdoors. Please bring a mask in case anyone present asks us to wear them.
Sliding scale: The materials fee is $15, plus an optional $15 for those who choose klaf. Whatever you can donate above the materials fee supports the teachers and space. Everyone who wants to participate is welcome, so if you can't afford this, please email info@yesodfarm.org and we will gladly supply free admission.
Rain: In case of rain, we will email you by 2:00pm on the scheduled date to notify you that the event is being postponed. Our rain date for that situation is Wednesday July 20.
Questions and accessibility: Please email info@yesodfarm.org with anything you'd like to ask or discuss. We don't check email every day, so please email by July 14 to ensure you'll get a response.
