About the Event
We are delighted to harvest amaranth together just before bringing in the new year on Rosh Hashana!
Amaranth is a diverse genus, with varieties grown for grain, leaves, and ornamental flowers. It was first cultivated by Maya, Inca, and Aztec ancestors, and today is grown by dozens of cultures on all six farmable continents.
Join us at our seed saving garden. We'll learn about the story of our amaranth, cut down seed heads, and then separate and winnow the seeds. Feel free to come at any point between 4 and 5pm. Below is a schedule for your reference.
Schedule:
4-6pm: Harvest, and learn the story of the amaranth
6-7pm: Dinner provided by Yesod Farm+Kitchen
You can learn more about this international amaranth project here: https://gardensedge.org/portfolio-items/seed-travels/
All ages are welcome. This includes families, folks of diverse abilities, and any religious background. There will be tasks for many ages and abilities and all are welcome to sit and listen or walk around the field.
Dress for the weather! Bring water, sun and rain protection, good shoes, clothes to get dirty in, layers in case it gets cold, and any snacks you might need. We will provide water, as well as serving dinner at 6pm.
You will receive our address upon registration.
Accessibility: Accessible parking is available a few hundred feet from where the amaranth is planted. The walking path between those sites is grassy and sloped. General parking is a 3-5 minute walk uphill on gravel. We will provide folding chairs. If you have a chair that works best for you, please feel free to bring it. There will be shade under trees. A composting toilet for your use is located by the accessible parking area. Please email info@yesodfarm.org with accessibility requests and questions.
COVID: Do not attend if you are experiencing covid symptoms, or tested positive for covid in the past 10 days. Do not attend if you were exposed to someone who tested positive or had covid symptoms in the past 10 days.
